The Taste, Tuesdays on ABC

I’ve seen commercials for The Taste but I had not seen the show yet. All of the episodes are available on ABC’s website here.  I just watched episode 4 which aired last week.

The show is about four teams who compete as a team as well as among each other.  Each team has a mentor who gives their opinion on what each contestant is cooking. The first part of episode 4 was about wine pairings and each dish was tested with the wine of choice. The judges only get one spoon of the team’s best dish for the solo taste test. Mentor Brian Malarkey waited literally until the time was on the last few seconds to choose whose spoon goes forward.

The second part of the show was about pairing a dish with a wine of each contestant’s choice. The mentor has to choose (in a blind test) which spoon has the best taste and which one has the worst. The judges include Anthony Bourdain and Nigella Lawson. The contestants range from chefs and caterers to those in other fields like  consultants and assistants.

I love the blind taste test.  Also love how they all hate on Gregg because of his ego and over-confidence. I’m glad his attitude or personality did not reflect on the solo taste test. The judges’ harshly criticize the spoons they do not like but they are enthusiastic about the spoons they really enjoyed. This show is a modern era version of Food Network’s Star. It’s fast-paced and fun to see how the contestants are reacting to each other’s creations. I will be watching this week! Watch The Taste: Tuesday at 8|7c on ABC.
